It's important to note that the titles and years above are estimates.
- Smaller companies may have fewer levels in their promotion ladders, while larger companies may have more levels. Supervisor (placed between senior accountant and manager) is one of the more common additional levels.
- Some companies will promote faster or slower, depending upon their firm's needs.
- Some employees may have different skills, work output, knowledge that is more valuable to a given firm. This may also alter their promotion schedules.
Some in the accounting field suggest that the best time to leave for a new firm is one year after promotion. This allows an accountant to trade on the new title without "wasting" additional years working partway toward the next title (but not yet achieve it).
